ECHO

Echo sits behind the large computer screen in the LaB and immediately rubs her temples.

“You can do this,” she mutters to herself, talking not just about the impossible task Reed has set her, but generally breathing in and out when she knows her father is not.

She’d slept deeply for a few hours after her vague memories of River carrying her to her room. Her brain had been so overloaded it’d given her no choice but to shut down. Then she’d woken in the darkness, hugged her pillow and cried until the soft sounds of music had piped into her room to let her know it was time to face the day.

Her first instinct had been to pull the covers over her head, but then she’d given herself a stern talking to. She cannot let her father’s death be in vain. The best way she can make things right and honor all the things he did for her is to do exactly what Chase has asked of her. She’s in a unique position in the Green Zone. She has an important job to do. She can help make sure that nobody else has to lose their father in the same way she lost hers.

“Press the button on the top right to turn it on,” says Reed from his desk, looking at her in confusion. “Please, tell me you’ve at least seen a computer before?”

“I’m a fast learner, remember.” Pressing the button, she watches as the screen lights up and is filled with an image of a green field. It looks almost as beautiful as it does in real life and she’s captivated once more that one color could have so many different shades.

“What do you call all these green colors?” She points at her screen, which Reed can just see if he leans back. “Do you have different names for all of them?”

He seems to find her question amusing. “There’s emerald and jade and juniper and olive. Then we have lime green and sea green and avocado and sage. It’s endless, really. Flora used to call them viridescent.”

“I’m not even going to ask how to spell that.” Echo smiles wearily.

She studies the photo, wondering which label applies to which color.

Reed turns back to his own screen. “Do you have different names for shades of gray where you’re from?”

She can’t tell if he’s mocking her or if it’s a serious question. “It’s just gray.” She studies the text box that’s popped up in the center of the screen, sounding out the words in her head.

“What’s a password mean?” she asks. “And why’s Flora’s name in this box?”

“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.” Reed sighs. “I didn’t realize you had literally zero experience with computers.”

“Then teach me.” Echo gives him an encouraging smile, certain this computer must contain hundreds of secrets about the Green Zone.

“Echo.” Reed leans back in his chair. “I can teach you a lot of things. But first I have to trust you. Which means you need to trust me.
